
Melanie Poturica has been with Liebert
Cassidy Whitmore since the firm’s inception in 1980. She has been its
Managing Partner since 1995 and is currently transitioning back to
full-time law practice as she co-manages the firm with its next managing
partner until October 2010. In her capacity as Managing Partner,
Melanie is responsible for directing the successful operation of Liebert
Cassidy Whitmore. This position entails a variety of challenging
administrative and leadership functions. Her responsibilities include
the overall management of the firm’s financial, legal, training and
personnel activities; she also oversees the firm’s strategic
planning.
Melanie is a vigorous
litigator with an extensive background in suits involving discrimination
and harassment, as well as disciplinary and due process issues, and
other employment law topics. In addition to her work as a litigator,
Melanie has successfully represented many clients in arbitrations and in
administrative hearings.
A continuous aspect of
Melanie’s practice is responding to requests from agencies for advice
and guidance regarding labor and employment law issues. She also is
called upon by other law firms to consult with them concerning complex
and sensitive employment issues.
Melanie is a dynamic
trainer, who brings the scope of her legal and management expertise to
her work as one of our firm’s top presenters. She has been instrumental
in developing our nationally renowned training programs.
Melanie authored
“California Supreme Court Excuses Managers from Retaliation Suit” which
was published in The Recorder. Melanie has co-authored “Affirmative
Action: What is Permissible, What Is Not?” and “U.S. Supreme Court
Rejects ‘Class-of-One’ Theory of Equal Protection,” both published in
the California Public Employee Relations periodical of the Institute of
Industrial Relations, University of California, Berkeley. She has also
co-authored “Conscious Search” published in California Law Business; “A
City Council Member’s Role With Respect to Individual City Employees,”
and “A City Council
Member’s Role With Respect to Individual City Employees” published in
Western City magazine; “Reeling in Retaliation,” “Public Sector
Employers Must Contend with Constitutional as well as Private Labor and
Employment Law,” and “Legal Maze” all published in the Los Angeles and
San Francisco Daily Journal.
Melanie is currently
serving on the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Executive Committee
of its Labor and Employment Law Section and as a member of the Labor and
Employment Law Symposium Committee. Melanie has received recognition as
a Southern California “Super Lawyer” the last several years. In 2007
she was recognized as one of the Top 50 Female Attorneys in Southern
California.
