SB 20 – Requires The Student Aid Commission Provide Notice To Students Of Their Eligibility For CalFresh Benefits

The bill requires the Student Aid Commission (the Commission) to provide written notice to recipients of Cal Grant awards whose grants include any amount of funding that has been derived from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or state match, to verify the student qualifies for participating in the CalFresh program under an exemption.

The bill also requires the Commission, to the extent permitted by federal law, to use the information to determine a student’s CalFresh eligibility, and possesses the pertinent information, the Commission shall notify students of their exemption from the CalFresh program eligibility rules and their potential eligible for CalFresh benefits. The bill requires the Commission to confer with stakeholders on at least an annual basis to implement this provision and to continuously improve the process of securing CalFresh benefits for eligible students.
